So, I've been missing from this space for quite a while. It took us longer to settle in after the move home than we anticipated and by the time we were settled, we were into birthday and Christmas seasons. A few weeks ago, the one year anniversary of the blog came up. I decided to start writing a blog in Korea, because I realized that all those things we found so exotic and extraordinary when we first moved there had become just an ordinary part of our everyday lives. I wanted to remember to look for the extraordinary in the everyday and thought that blogging would help me to be more observant. I decided that applied to our life here at home too and decided to keep the blog open. Since then I've been looking for something to kick start the blogging, something to overcome my inertia.
My first thing I want to say to you at my revitalized blog is this piece of advice: When you pull out your sewing machine after not having really done much with it in 2 years and you settle in to make your child some pyjama pants, start with the fabric about which she said, "Oh, OK , if you like it, Mummy." Don't start with the fabric covered with galloping horses that made her squeal and beg for PJs made from that fabric.
If you do start with the galloping horses, you will almost certainly NOT be paying attention when you are cutting into the fabric. You WILL screw it up in such a way that it cannot be sorted out. Then you are going to have to spend the afternoon figuring out how to tell your kid that you ruined them and saying some prayers that the fabric store will still have more of that print that you bought months ago (see note above about birthdays and Christmas). Also, you'll end up writing up a quick "Hi, I'm back finally" post for your blog because now you're gong to be making a trip to the fabric store in the time that you had scheduled to write a scintillating post about your prolonged absence.
Update: Success! The fabric store still had the fabric and I was able to buy enough to make another pair of PJ pants. I had forgotten to flip my pattern piece when cutting the fabric, thus ending up two right pant legs. I will now cleverly flip my pattern piece and cut out two left pant legs, resulting in two complete sets of galloping horse jammies. A win all around!
