I liked the idea of Wordless Wednesday for a blog, the idea of just snapping a photo to capture part of your day and posting it to your blog. I tried it a few times. It just never seemed to gel for me. For one thing, Wednesday always seems to be the day with the least amount of interesting things going on around here. I always seem to be writing up the grocery list, serving leftovers instead of some fabulous meal and clearing up clutter scattered all over the house. I might be wrong but I suspect that a series of photos of the detritus from my fridge, my grocery list or before and afters of my picked up living room are not going to be inspiring repeat visits, even from my friends. So I've decided to aim for Photos on Friday : a weekly summary of photos. Hopefully, it'll inspire me to get my camera out more often.
Since I've been such an uninspired blogger, you get photos from the entire month of May, instead of just one week.
The beginning of May was time for the show for the Geisler's dance school. This was her favourite out of the 6 costumes she wore (Please excuse the backdrop. High school cafeterias aren't generally known for their lovely decor).
The rest of May has been all about the garden.
And now we're waiting (im)patiently for strawberry season to start.
(We were waiting when I snapped the picture. A few minutes later, we declared the season open and picked it to have for dessert tonight.)
Thanks for stopping by.
I meant to post photos from our last couple months in Korea once we got home and settled in. Then I was planning to post photos of our last few months in Korea and our summer at home. And then it became plans for the Korean photos, summer and fall. You get the picture, I'm sure. I had intended to do a "what we've been up to since we got back from Korea" post but as more time passes, it was getting more and more involved and there was more and more inertia. So, without further ado, here are some of my favourite photos from the last few months.
Finally, a photo of the infamous silkworm pupae snack cart. The silkworms are the brown stuff in the pot. The grey stuff in the other pot is some sort of little snail-like thing. Either way, when you purchase these snacks, they'll ladle you out a paper cup of your snack and hand it to you with a little pin. Most of the other carts I saw only sold the silkworm and the snail things so I never really got close enough for decent photos. I felt OK sticking my camera near the cart to take a picture because we bought a snack from this one. Yeah, we went with the cherries.
On our last evening in Korea, we went to one of our favourite barbecue restaurants . Those guys behind the Geezler aren't staring intently at our little rock star; they, along with everyone else ( including the staff), are staring at the TV behind her, watching the Red Devils play soccer. Free beers for everybody when they scored (except for the Geezler, of course; she got a popsicle).
Once we got over the jet lag, we got reaquainted with the flora and fauna in our back yard. Don't worry. All captured "boogs" were released back into the wild after a short period of time (except for a Houdini-like spider, who made her own way out of the jar while it was in the house.)
Guess where we spent our summer vacation?
Yep, we went to visit a mouse, some princesses and their friends.
So, I've been missing from this space for quite a while. It took us longer to settle in after the move home than we anticipated and by the time we were settled, we were into birthday and Christmas seasons. A few weeks ago, the one year anniversary of the blog came up. I decided to start writing a blog in Korea, because I realized that all those things we found so exotic and extraordinary when we first moved there had become just an ordinary part of our everyday lives. I wanted to remember to look for the extraordinary in the everyday and thought that blogging would help me to be more observant. I decided that applied to our life here at home too and decided to keep the blog open. Since then I've been looking for something to kick start the blogging, something to overcome my inertia.
My first thing I want to say to you at my revitalized blog is this piece of advice: When you pull out your sewing machine after not having really done much with it in 2 years and you settle in to make your child some pyjama pants, start with the fabric about which she said, "Oh, OK , if you like it, Mummy." Don't start with the fabric covered with galloping horses that made her squeal and beg for PJs made from that fabric.
If you do start with the galloping horses, you will almost certainly NOT be paying attention when you are cutting into the fabric. You WILL screw it up in such a way that it cannot be sorted out. Then you are going to have to spend the afternoon figuring out how to tell your kid that you ruined them and saying some prayers that the fabric store will still have more of that print that you bought months ago (see note above about birthdays and Christmas). Also, you'll end up writing up a quick "Hi, I'm back finally" post for your blog because now you're gong to be making a trip to the fabric store in the time that you had scheduled to write a scintillating post about your prolonged absence.
Update: Success! The fabric store still had the fabric and I was able to buy enough to make another pair of PJ pants. I had forgotten to flip my pattern piece when cutting the fabric, thus ending up two right pant legs. I will now cleverly flip my pattern piece and cut out two left pant legs, resulting in two complete sets of galloping horse jammies. A win all around!
